ESSENTIAL TO THE PROCESS is my to-do list, upon which appears every single thing that needs to happen in a script before the current draft is finished, big or small. Need to change one word in the third line in the tenth scene because it’s trite? Put it on the to-do list. Want to remember to add that song you love to the hand job scene? To-do list. Realize that you hate your main character and need to completely overhaul the whole first act? To-do list, bitch. I developed this habit many years ago when I was writing my first script, and I credit my entire television writing career to keeping at it. Big projects are never NOT a collection of smaller tasks. Make the creative process modular.
